There’s dozens of movies about the ever terrifying great white shark. Constantly painted as villainous blood hungry carnivores who are always looking for their next meal. However the animals have so many more layers to them.
Everyone knows the sharks are warm blooded efficient hunters who like ambushing their prey, but there’s so much more to them. Like they have special organs called Ampullae of Lorenzini which helps them find their prey through detecting weaker electric fields from heart and muscle movement of their prey. As well as navigating through dark or murky waters or finding other sharks or fish.
It’s a common thought that great white sharks can smell fear. Now that isn’t entirely false, the animals have the ability to smell the subtle changes in the water like the animals adrenaline or cortisol which could attract the hunters. Great white sharks have phenomenal senses that have helped them hunt all kinds of fish or other prey for thousands of years.
Great white sharks have so many other traits from their thousands of years of using the world’s vast oceans as hunting grounds for their apex predator status. Most of the time the hunters usually hunt small fish or seals and not humans like Hollywood are portraying them too. Most of the shark attacks on humans are mistaken identities or accidents as the hunter mistakes the humans for their normal prey.
Great white sharks aren’t invincible either. They are constantly being hunted for their fins or skin to turn into soups or clothing which actually lead to them to be considered a vulnerable species and are on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’s red list. The great white shark is just another apex predator that got turned into a Hollywood villain who was just trying to survive.
