As school kicks off, the school hallways are abuzz with excited chatter and bright energy. For many, the new school year promises students a chance to form new connections with others and get involved in the diverse multitude of activities Timberline has to offer. This school year, Timberline is excited to provide another opportunity for students to connect, collaborate, and talk about what matters most to them in a safe, welcoming space.
Mckenna Satterfield, a junior at Timberline, founded the new Current Events Club alongside Ms. Resnick as a way for students to get more involved in school activities. Both of them hope the club will not only keep students informed of current news but also foster in-person collaboration and critical thinking skills.
“I think peer connection is really important for teens, especially when they discuss [the news]… Because parents can have very different perspectives than their children, we want this club to [empower] students with their own perspectives of the world in a way that feels personal to them,” Resnick remarked. Furthermore, Satterfield hopes to cultivate a casual, fun, and chill atmosphere while maintaining a culture of respect and open-mindedness during meetings.
By drawing parallels between school and the current world, the Current Events Club ultimately aims to inform students about what’s happening around them and guide them towards becoming successful citizens in the future. If you are interested in joining, the Current Events Club will be hosting its next meeting during lunch in room 220 on Thursday, Sept. 18.
