It’s that time of the year. The air is getting colder, and anticipation for this year’s musical is at an all time high. Opening Night is a choir concert for select audition students. They practice and perform a song from a Broadway musical of their choice. These students have been working hard on their solo and group songs for the show, and blew the audience away Thursday night during an incredible performance. From musicals such as Hamilton and Frozen, each singer gave their all.
However, Opening Night was not just any choir concert. At the end of the show, the winter musical was to be announced! Many thoughts and guesses floated around in the coming weeks; what would the musical be? Would it be The Sound of Music? Would it be Grease? Or maybe even Mary Poppins? The encore students could only imagine…
As if the anticipation wasn’t enough, after every act, a musical was removed from a board containing all the possible options. Throughout the night, the audience would cheer or shout cries of “NO!” as musicals were slowly removed from the list. At the end of the night, only two musicals remained; Hadestown, and Grease… The audience and students were on the edge of their seats, waiting for one last musical to be removed from the board. Finally, Hadestown was thrown off the board, meaning the Grease was the only one remaining.
Cheers went up- but wait-that wasn’t all. There seemed to be some confusion. As the audience sits confused, Mr. Kane and Mr. King tore down the poster board to reveal a whiteboard underneath. The musical was not Grease… but takes place IN Greece. This year’s dinner show performance is MAMA MIA!
Leaping from their seats, the cast of Opening Night took the stage to sing the reprise of “Stars” from Mean Girls. As they sang the closing song, they all celebrated the end of an amazing concert, and excitement for the musical ahead.
