Last night, Democrats won in electoral races that were given nationwide attention. This included several governor’s races, the New York City mayoral race, and Democratic-supported ballot initiatives in various states. Various news sources are calling it the first test of the second Trump administration, as Democrats have struggled since the election to find their footing. Election Day this year came as the current federal government shutdown became the longest in US history, currently at the time of publication, 35 days and counting.
In this year’s historic New York City mayoral election, Zohran Mamdani was elected the first-ever Muslim mayor of America’s largest city. Mamdani defeated former NY governor Andrew Cuomo, running a campaign promising hope and progress. Both Cuomo and Republican candidate, Curtis Sliwa, gave concession speeches congratulating Mamdani on his victory. “Tonight was their night, but we must unite as New Yorkers because of our love for this city,” Cuomo said. Mamdani’s victory speech focused on familiar topics such as hope and progress. “We are a city of immigrants, built by immigrants and led by immigrants,” said Mamdani.
As mentioned before, this election featured two governor’s races in Virginia and New Jersey. According to NBC News, Virginia Democrat Abigail Spanberger defeated Winsome Earle-Sears by 16%, flipping the governor’s seat party-wise. Polls before Election Day predicted Spanberger would win by 8%. In New Jersey, Democrat Mikie Sherrill defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli by 13%. The New Jersey win is a relief for Democrats due to a closer margin in New Jersey in the 2024 Presidential election, when Kamala Harris carried New Jersey by only 5%.
Earlier this year, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced a ballot initiative that would gerrymander California’s congressional districts to favor Democrats. Governor Newsom justified the initiative by claiming it was a response to gerrymandering efforts from Republican-led states such as Texas. The initiative passed overwhelmingly with 63% of voters approving the redistricting, according to Fox News. The gerrymander in California will be in effect for the 2026 Midterm elections and will expire in 2030. California’s redistricting will likely affect the control of the US Congress.
Taking a local look, Boise had some electoral races of interest. The Open Water Space Levy was overwhelmingly approved with over 80% voting ‘Yes’ according to the Idaho Statesman. The levy will raise $11 million in the span of two years to fund new pathways and habitat preservation in the Boise area, according to the city government. The Boise City Council saw just two contested races, with both incumbents, Jimmy Hallyburton and Colin Nash, soundly winning reelection.
